![]() To place the current window into position, mouse over one of the layout choices. On ultra-wide displays, you will see six layout choices. With traditional 16:9, 16:10, and 3:2 displays, you will see four layout choices as shown above. The choices you see here will depend on the width of your display. This feature provides a flyout that displays possible Snap window layouts when you mouse over the Maximize window button of any window, or when you type WINKEY + Z. In Windows 11, Snap works as before but also includes a few enhancements. A key part of this utility, incredibly, has been integrated into Windows 11 and is now called Snap Layouts. In 2019, Microsoft relaunched the PowerToys brand with a new utility called FancyZones that extends the Snap experience to allow for more complex and useful on-screen window layouts. Windows 10 also lets you snap windows to the corners of the screen, where they will occupy about 25 percent of the available on-screen space by default. In Windows 10, a new feature called Snap Assist-basically a replacement for Switcher-shows thumbnails of the remaining open windows when you snap a window, making it easier to get up and running with two side-by-side windows. (And with large enough screens, one could snap three apps side-by-side.) There was also an Auto Snap feature that allowed individual apps to display two windows side-by-side the canonical example is the Mail app, where you might display an email message in its own window next to the main app window. In Windows 8.1, Microsoft improved Snap dramatically by allowing even Metro-style apps, which by that time were called Store apps, to snap to one half of the screen and be arbitrarily resized on the fly. Because of the system’s new focus on touch-first interfaces, Snap could be configured in three ways: Using the mouse, as before using keyboard shortcuts (like WINKEY + LEFT ARROW and WINKEY + RIGHT ARROW and via touch-based gestures. A UI called Switcher would appear when you initiated Snap to show you which apps were compatible and could be snapped into that smaller space. And since most Metro-style apps didn’t support being snapped in the latter configuration, the feature was even less useful. The second, secondary, app, meanwhile, could only occupy a tiny, fixed-width sliver of on-screen real estate. One app was considered the primary app, that app would occupy most of the on-screen real estate. With Snap, Windows 8 users could display two Metro apps, or one desktop app and one Metro app, side-by-side on-screen.Īs originally implemented, however, Snap was quite limited. And so Microsoft offered a concession, called Snap. Metro-style apps, as they were called, could only run full-screen, an anachronistic limitation on a powerful desktop platform like Windows. In Windows 8, Microsoft added a mobile apps platform that was initially called Metro and was backed by an online apps store, the Windows Store, similar to those found on mobile platforms like Android and iPhone. You could also drag a window to the top of the display to maximize it, or drag a maximized window down to restore it. ![]() That changed in Windows 7 with the arrival of Aero Snap, a feature that let you drag a window to the left or right edge of the display, where it would “snap” to that edge and occupy 50 percent of the width of the display. Microsoft finally added overlapping window support to Windows with version 2.03-and yes, Apple did sue, for that and other Windows features that it claimed copied the Mac-and for the next decade and a half or more, the ability to cascade and stack open windows were the only notable window management innovations that Microsoft added to the product. ![]() Instead, windows were full-screen or, when used with other windows, would automatically tile to fill the available space. The roots of this feature date back literally to the earliest days of Windows, when Microsoft, fearful of an intellectual property lawsuit from Apple, decided not to support arbitrarily-sized floating and overlapping application windows. Snap is a productivity feature that helps users arrange applications and other windows logically on-screen. ![]() In Windows 11, Microsoft is improving the Snap window management feature yet again with new features. ![]()

I have tried it on many Mac computers of various generations (macbooks, imacs, mac mini, over 20 computers) and it was faster on all of them. If someone wants to try this with the software which is used in the video, you can get it here. It is totally counter-intuitive, that software runs better if it has less memory and graphics resources (since they are used by the other session). It is really awkward way of working, and it is hard to advocate with normal users. This apparently resets the graphics subsystem and cleans the "slow" system state. You can make it fast again if you logout and login (but still keeping the other session), without shutting down the computer. The only problem is that after some time (can't figure out what is triggering it), it becomes slow again. But it also shows that it could run at full speed. This demonstrates that some Apple bug prevents the software from working normally, either in XQuartz, or at lower level. It was running like this before El Capitan when it became slow. IT RUNS AT FULL SPEED!!! Same program, same computer, same versions of software. Second part of video shows how the program works, if you start the Mac computer, login as one user, and then start another session (without closing first one), and then start the X11 based program which uses XQuartz. Other operations work normally, but use interface is too slow fully productive use. I show only opening of menus by passing the mouse over menu title, but main slowness is actually in resizing windows. I have created a short video to demonstrate the how slow is XQuartz with the Motif based textile CAD software, and a hack to make it faster. # run demo WITH uncover hack (about 300 msec)ĭYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/tmp/tcl8.5.18/unix:/tmp/tk8.5.18/unix /tmp/tk8.5.18/unix/wish zz.tcl 1 # run demo WITHOUT uncover hack (takes 7-8 secs)ĭYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/tmp/tcl8.5.18/unix:/tmp/tk8.5.18/unix /tmp/tk8.5.18/unix/wish zz.tcl 0 # speedup req's Xwin (exist OK, too) to get behind If -e bash -norc &]Īfter 50 # req'd else xterm not drawn in time (> ~10ms) # X11/tk/wish demo huge slowdown 10.10+ drawing speed, hack workaround # put following demo tcl/tk script into: /tmp/zz.tcl ![]() ![]() The uncover hack gets us back to only 5x slower. I realize that this is not a direct comparison, but a factor of 20 difference in speed doesn't seem right. The same program run on Linux via a modest PC-based virtual machine with 24-bit color takes about 16 seconds. On my Mac mini, the program takes around 42 sec on 8-bit color, and over five minutes on the default 24-bit color settings, which means the 24-bit case is more than 7x slower. To test things, I made a simple X11 program, attached here, which calls XDrawLine() many times. I think earlier versions of XQuartz might not have had this problem. I also saw drastic slowdown in my own X11 applications, and recently discovered that it seems to be related to whether XQuartz is in TrueColor (24 bit) or PseudoColor (8 bit) mode. Xquartz 2.7.8 / Mac OS X 10.11.1 / Mac mini (Late 2014, Intel Iris Graphics)Īs long ago as Mac OS X Yosemite, some folks have reported graphics slowdowns, for example: It is also generally slow compared to X11 performance on Linux. The Paperback Book Hardcover books are published in fewer numbers than paperbacks but being priced higher they tend to bring in more profits for the publisher. Books on law, autobiographies, best sellers, reference guides, and classic literary works are published as hardcover books too. Many academic books and Christian books are published in the hardcover version. The pages are stitched together which is why it can be laid flat on any surface when opened. The spine of a hardcover books are flexible. On the back flap is the biography of the author sometimes accompanied by a photograph and photo/design credits. On the folded dust jacket, the front cover carries the blurb. In this type of hardcover books, the design is directly printed on the board binding. Now the jacketless hardcover version has become popular too. Hardcovers have dust jackets that are artistically designed. The pH value of acid-free paper is 7, which makes them long lasting. Now moving inside, the paper on which a hardback is printed is acid-free paper. Hardcovers don’t get damaged easily so they last for years. The function of the dust jacket is to protect the pages and keep them intact for a long time. The board is binder’s board or heavy paperboard covered with buckram, a type of stiff cotton cloth, heavy paper, or sometimes leather. The hard cover is a hardbound book that has a jacket called the dust jacket over the main cover. Have you got a Big Question you'd like us to answer? If so, let us know by emailing us at. Frugal, practical readers eventually get to buy their preferred version of the book, but only after the hardcover has been milked for as much revenue as possible. That means publishers can drum up fresh excitement around a title around the time that sales are usually starting to peter out. Releasing the paperback edition a year after a book debuts is an excuse for another big publication event. "Hardcovers are also more often reviewed and considered for awards and are more often ordered by libraries." Hardcovers have a more commanding visual presence as well, and they're easier for bookstores to display.Īfter sitting out a book's initial print run, paperbacks do ultimately benefit from arriving late to the party-as do publishers and booksellers. "There is also a level of prestige attached to a hardcover versus a paperback, as it a commitment by the publisher to the work," Dunn says. ![]() While paperbacks have lost much of the stigma once attached to them, they still can't match the built-in importance of a hefty hardcover. The fact that it's the only print option for the first months of a book's life isn't the format's only appeal. "An author's fans are willing to pay the higher price in order to get the book when it is first published," Dunn says. Publishers can then sell them for upwards of $30 and rake in enormous profits.Ĭheaper paperbacks are more popular with consumers, accounting for roughly 80 percent of all print book sales, but when a book is still new, sellers can count on certain readers to pay more for the hardback. Hardcovers may be more expensive to produce than paperbacks, but they still cost just a few dollars to print. "While a hardcover book is more expensive to print than a paperback, the publisher does traditionally make more money on that edition, allowing them to earn back the author's advance and the costs they incurred for printing, shipping, marketing, and distribution," Dinah Dunn, a partner at the book packager Indelible Editions, tells Mental Floss. People who do their reading at the beach or on the subway may not be happy about it, but the financial benefits of this model mean it likely isn't going away any time soon It's a common practice among publishers to release new titles as hardcovers and publish the paperback edition about a year after the initial print run. By 1960, paperbacks were the preferred book format of readers.ĭespite their popularity, it's still impossible to find paperback versions of many new books when they debut. The softcover "pocket books" were cheaper to print, cheaper to buy, and easier to transport than the bulky hardcovers that had previously dominated bookstores.
